Clone Conversation_After Effects

Resultado final:

premiere tutorial clone effect

A short tutorial on using simple techniques to make it appear that you’ve cloned someone. Incredible timing methods discussed aswell.

This tutorial uses a similar technique to the nightcrawler one. You should be able to see the similarities between effects here. What you’ll need for this tutorial:

  1. Camera
  2. Tripod
  3. Computer
  4. Editing software (adobe premire or adobe after effects, many programs will do this effect.)

Lets name our clones. We’ll call them left clone and right clone. Lets say that left clone wants to take right clones hat. Left clone wants the hat to use on a date, while right clone wants the hat to keep him warm while he gets ice cream… uhhh yeah stupid idea i know, but whatever lets move on. Since left clone and right clone are having a conversation there is no need for them to move around too much. This is perfect. We dont want our clones to both pass a certain part on the screen or else it will look like that part of the clone is cut off. Lets look at the theory behind this effect. It will help you understand what is taking place here and will make your filming hopefully better.

Obviously you can’t be in two places at once. So your going to have to film yourself twice. First we will film the right clone (i know that it looks backwards…) we will also make sure that the right clone doesn’t pass over this imaginary middle line we have. Next we will film the left clone in the same way, except this time he will be on the opposite side of the room.

Once in our editor we will “cut” off one half of the footage, then once overlapped it will look like there is two of your actor.
Now, why it is soo important that you dont cross the middle line is so that your clone doesn’t get cut off along with the rest of that half.Step 1: Ohkay, so now that you know you’re doing its time to film.

Plan, Plan, and oh yeah, Plan… I’m not joking in order for you to pull off this effect with even a little bit of realism it requires quite a bit of planning. First off who is standing where, then who is saying what ect.

You’re going to need a tripod, moving the camera even slightly can ruin the effect here. Other than that you’ll need a script and practice. It takes time to figure out who says what and WHEN they say it (When is the hardest part). Once you think you’ve timed up what you say to your clone, pull out the camera and the tripod.

Set up the shot and film one clone first. Next, WITHOUT moving the tripod film the second clone. Doing this part correctly is hard and will take practice. Dont worry if you screw it up on the first time.

Done? ok good.

Again, the hardest part is over. You may not think it is, but you’ll realize soon enough that the hardest part is filming, and it takes a while before you can nail it perfectly.

Step 2: Get that footage onto your computer! the higher the quality the better, but also higher file sizes.

import.jpgStep 3: Get that into your favourite video editor. I’m using premire pro 2.0 for this tutorial but because of the simplicity of this effect you can use several different editors.
stacked.jpgStep 4: Split the video into two, so that one starts with right clone, and the other starts with left clone. Now put right clone on the video layer above left clone or vise versa.
step5.jpgStep 5: Next, Select the top layer. Then in the effects pannel choose, Video Effects > Keying > Four-Point Garbage Matte. Drag that ontop of the top video layer, to add the effect to that clip.
step6.jpgStep 6: Twirl down the Four-Point Garbage Matte effect in the Effect Control pannel. Set up the Garbage matte so that one side follows tha imaginary line we talked about earlier, and the other side should stay at the edge of your clip. You should see your other self magically appear.

Now… you could possibly be done, only you can tell, if you watch through your clip and everything is well, then you are done. Congratulations, it rarely happens that way..

If you are with the 99% of people god hates and doesn’t make things work out perfectly move on to the next couple steps

Bonus Steps Use only if needed.

bonus1.jpgBonus Step 1: If your can still see a line inbetween your two actors then you may want to change the brightness contrast of either layer. This is a quick and easy way to fix this problem, if it doesn’t work, try other colour correctors or filters. Anyways you can find Brightness & Contrast under the Effects Pannel, Video Effects > Adjust > Brightness & Contrast. Notice the change between sides?Your objective is to try and match the lighting useing these filters. (my picture will show you how it will affect the effect)
bonus2.jpgBonus Step 2: if your camera moved, then normally you would have to refilm the whole thing. I bet you any money you would be alot more carefull this time around. However if it only moved slighlty then you still have a chance at salvaging your footage. You can try to align your two clips using the Position attribute. Select the clip you want to move and under the effect control tab twril down the Motion option, and play around with position, rotation may also help align things. Notice how one video moved, your objective is to try and line up the two seperate videos. (my picture will show you how it will affect the effect)
Bonus Step 3: If your clones speak to eachother and it lines up. Congratulations your amazing. If not, you can try to align the speach by adjusting the speed of the clone that is waiting to talk. Eg. If clone one is talking and half way through clone two starts his reply, make clone two wait in slow motion…Here is a quick trick a figured out on how to fix that:

bonus3_1.jpgFind the part where clone two stops talking. Split that part so that it becomes it’s own clip. Move the clip where clone two start talking again so that it aligns back up with the conversation.
bonus3_2.jpgThen right click that clip where clone two is waiting and select Speed/Duration
bonus3_3.jpgChange the speed from 100% to a percentage that fills up that viod.
Now when you play it back everything should look fine and be aligned properly. Repeat for all the area’s where the clone’s speach doesn’t line up.

You’re done. If your not satisfied with your results, just remember to keep practicing and don’t give up. Remember it takes time to learn how to make this effect sellable. To make it look more realistic you can, instead of taaking to yourself, ask a friend to play the role of your clone. Then once both roles are done by you, edit your friend out. This can make the effect more realistic as it helps with the timing and gives you a subject to look at. I may post a sequel tutorial to this which will help with lighting issues, and other problems. Hopefully it will also touch on clone interaction, and moving cameras…
